The Runaway King (Book review)
A kingdom teetering on the brink of destruction. A king gone missing. Who will survive?
Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the Kingdom may be his only hope of saving it.
As his adventures lead him into dangerous new territory, Jaron must learn to tell his friends from his enemies and decide whom he can trust. If he can trust anyone at all. But the further Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom?
The stunning second installment of the Ascendance Series takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of treason and murder, thrills and peril, as they journey with the Runaway King.
“Long live King Jaron. If he leads us half as well as he entertains us, then Carthya has a truly great future ahead.”
Wow, this book is action-packed and exciting for sure. This is the book that introduced me to the Ascendance series, and it's one of my favorites. Like the first book, Jaron/Sage has some wild and insane plans that you can't figure out, but turn out to be the most well-thought-out thing ever! Like, how does he do it?
This book introduces amazing new characters, and the whole pirate place is so cool. The dynamic of ruthless, rude, and hectic pirates versus a crazy, smart, and sassy boy was so entertaining.
Imogen is back, and here we start to see a deeper connection between Jaron and her. I think their relationship is really sweet. But they still don't establish anything yet, so you're just holding onto them and hoping they get it together for the entire book, but then you get a cliffhanger at the end.
Jaron is more reckless than ever in this book. Like he does some insane stuff, and it made me question his durability cause this guy gets hurt left and right and somehow, he still survives and wins countless battles. It makes it more unrealistic, like his pain is just casual papercuts and splinters. But it's just a book, and if you look at it that way, it just makes him all the more cool, so I don't mind it.
This book is epic. I really enjoyed it and I recommend it to anyone to read. The plot plays out nicely and ties into the other books good. It’s fast-paced and full of good humor, a lot of humor. Seriously, Jaron likes to make humor in the midst of battles and death.
It, like the first book, is a simpler read, but I think anyone from 12-18 could enjoy it. Even older than that if you want!
I rate this book 10/10 for ages 12+

“Wherever our lives lead us, one thing is certain. You and I will always be connected. You might be able to deny that, but I can't. Even I am not that good a liar.”
